Two Louisiana Sportsbook Bills Get Support from Senate

Two Louisiana sportsbook bills got the approval of the Senate on Wednesday and Thursday. Thus, both bills will now head to the House for debate. The first one would bring sports betting into a ballot proposition in November. The second bill excludes mobile betting.

The Senate approved SB 130 with a vote of 23-9. It would send a proposition in the ballot this November to ask voters’ approval for sports betting in their parish. Voters will have their say on whether they want sports wagering in their community or not.

Also, the Senate approved SB 378, which includes several rules and regulations on sports betting in the state. The most notable one is the exclusion of fully-mobile wagering. Lawmakers allowed on-site mobile betting if players are within the premises of casinos.

Based on the two proposed bills, sports betting in Louisiana will be like how it is done in Mississippi. A PPH sportsbook can’t offer mobile betting because players need to be inside a casino to bet on their smartphones.

With the proposed bill, it is not recommended to be an online bookie in Louisiana. Although the bill allows betting on the Olympics and college sports, eSports would not be permitted. Lawmakers are trying to get the final approval on the proposals before the session ends on the 10th of June.

Daily fantasy sports had a similar experience a couple of years ago. Even though parishes voted in favor of DFS, it is still illegal in the state because lawmakers can’t agree on taxation and regulation. A political forum expects sports betting to suffer the same fate as that of daily fantasy sports in Louisiana.

Even if the parishes approve sports betting, it will take some time for lawmakers to figure out taxes and create regulations to govern sports wagering in the state.
