Maine legalized sports betting for almost a month. However, players can't place wagers legally in the state any time soon. Regulators are still developing regulations for Maine sports betting.

The Gambling Control Unit is responsible for drafting the rules. They said that players can expect to place the first wagers in the state next spring or early 2024. Thus, there's enough time to learn how to be a bookie in Maine.

The regulators are working according to the law. Thus, they can't fast-track the process because they need to follow the timeframe stated within the state's Administrative Procedure Act. Also, the regulators are working hard behind the scenes to ensure a smooth launch for the sports betting market in the state.

Maine Sports Betting Still a Work in Progress

According to political news reports, off-track wagering sites and casinos will get in-person betting. However, the four Native American tribes will monopolize mobile sports betting in Maine. There will be a high demand for software for bookies in the state soon.

Each tribe can choose a sports betting provider. First, however, the providers need to apply for a license. The Gambling Control Unit is working towards accepting applications soon. That way, providers can work on their applications.

Regulators know that people are frustrated because of the long wait. However, they said that the sports betting launch in Maine is worth the wait. Also, they are making sure the rules are proper the first time.

The Gambling Control Unit hopes to have the first draft of the sports wagering rules by the end of 2022. After that, the Office of the AG and the public will review the proposed regulations. Once launched, Maine expects to earn at least $6 million annually.
