Massachusetts Sports Betting: What’s Holding It Back?
Time is moving slowly in Beacon Hill. Despite Governor Charlie Baker’s approval, players are still waiting for the launch of Massachusetts sports betting. It has been three months since the governor signed the bill, yet the State Gaming Commission is slow in launching the market.
The Massachusetts Gaming Commission currently controls casinos and horse racing and plans a two-phase debut. First, existing gambling facilities would be able to begin providing sports wagering in late January, in time for the Super Bowl, according to the commissioners’ proposed schedule. They want to launch mobile betting in early March, allowing college basketball fans to place wagers on March Madness. Also, they want to succeed in a challenging sports betting market.

According to political news reports, commissioners have warned that unanticipated complications may arise and cause the commencement to be delayed, so those dates may not be fixed in stone. In addition, while some legislative leaders anticipated that sports betting would be up and running immediately after the bill was approved, regulators have stated that they want to spend the time necessary to do things right and set up an open market.
As they work toward those 2023 goals, the commission has identified around 225 regulations that must be implemented. At today’s Gaming Commission meeting, seven rules and regulatory modifications addressing themes such as protecting underage kids, occupational licenses, and sports wagering equipment are scheduled for an examination and potential voting.
By the end of October, the Gaming Commission had received questionnaires from 29 potential sports betting companies. The poll was the first stage in the application process, and not all who responded will probably submit complete applications due by next Monday with a $200,000 processing fee.
